The Most Complex Curved Aluminium Structure Built To Date

23rd February 2020

Curved Aluminium Structure is an exciting new project from Inductaflex that shows our advanced engineering skills. Inductaflex proudly supplied custom machines built for the world’s most complex bending project.

This project involved shaping huge, three-dimensional twisted aluminium profiles. Our UK team designed and manufactured a bespoke machine to handle these intricate curves.

Craig Barnshaw, our lead aluminium forming engineer, called it ‘the most complex bending job he has worked on in 30 years.’ His expertise helped solve many technical challenges.

This Curved Aluminium Structure project pushes the limits of aluminium bending technology. It shows Inductaflex’s strong commitment to innovation and excellence.

The main section rib weighs over 55kg/m and is likely one of the heaviest extruded profiles ever curved. Bending it in both axes with a twist along its full length appeared nearly impossible.

However, Craig Barnshaw developed the bending system and CNC controls, spending hundreds of hours on engineering analysis just to achieve the first successful bend. In addition to this massive profile, a second channel profile also required bending. It had to follow the exact 3D curves of the main rib.

Matching both bends with a perfect 3D twist was, in Craig’s words, “the closest to impossible you could find.”
